We will stop the coronavirus together!
People call our healthcare professionals heroes, but they don’t view themselves that way. Granted, the conditions they work under are extreme. Yet even under these conditions, they are more than 100% committed and do what they do best: take care of patients and research the coronavirus.
If you want to defeat your enemy, you need to get to know them well — very well. Every detail, every weak point, can make the difference. Our researchers look at COVID-19 through this lens. They are working hard to learn all about the virus and use that knowledge to develop possible treatments and drugs. This has already led to positive results. Here are a few examples of research that has been accelerated, without the budgets having been finalised yet: after all, there is no time to waste!
“It seems that we have found an essential mechanism in the disease process of COVID-19, which has so far been overlooked. It is a mechanism that has important consequences for the treatment of the disease. In an international context, we are now investigating whether the new insights and treatments are indeed having an effect in practice.” Dr Frank van de Veerdonk, internist
“In collaboration with UMC Utrecht, we started a study on the possible efficacy of the tuberculosis vaccine (BCG vaccine). If it works, we can better protect our healthcare workers from the coronavirus.”
Prof. Mihai Netea, Professor of Experimental Internal Medicine
Protective equipment and ventilation equipment
Until we have beaten the virus, it's important to protect our healthcare professionals so that they can continue to provide the best care to our patients. We need help for this too. Examples of this are testing facial protectors and face masks or designing an alternative ventilator, a project ICU doctor Dr Hugo Touw is working on, to be able to scale up the capacity of ICUs at home and abroad when needed.
Help us — donate!
Do you want to help with these solutions? Make a donation today. We consider this a heroic act. Any amount helps. Thank you on behalf of all our healthcare professionals!
We are working on all fronts to obtain the necessary funding. In addition to this crowdfunding campaign where everyone can donate online, funds and companies can also support the research at Radboud university medical center through the Radboud Fund. You can contact Marieke Kokkeler.
